Fool Me Once Book Review: A Gripping Netflix Thriller

Harlan Coben’s Fool Me Once is a thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Adapted into an addictive Netflix Original series, the book follows Maya, a woman who after viewing footage from her nanny cam—she realizes that something isn’t right; her dead husband appears to be alive and well, playing with their daughter.

An unexpected event that changes everything. Maya Stern is barely a week home from Afghanistan, where she served as a pilot in an elite Special Ops unit, when her older sister, Claire, is murdered at the site of what should have been the most important day of her life.

A protagonist who must face her or his fears and self-doubts. The police arrival at Maya’s front door caps off an excruciating 24 hours for her: First, she met another grieving mother and learned about the seemingly unrelated murders of two other people in her late sister’s circle. Then she watched in shock as herself attended Claire’s funeral.

Highly difficult hidden truths Maya had no idea anything was amiss with Claire until recently rehabbed Aunt Vi pointed out that all Nest White Wing Vane households are inherently dysfunctional.

As readers have come to expect from Coben (The Stranger; Six Years), linear plotlines don’t suit him nearly as well as stories involving shocking surprises and alfresco pasts barking through cell-phone static in the dark of night.

Grief and Loss: How devastating grief can be and what lengths people will go to, to deal with loss.

Betrayal and Deception: The damage betrayal can cause and what lengths people will go to, to keep a secret.
